A Wine Stopper With Bottle Opening Date Reminder

I never got wine stoppers. If you open a bottle of wine, you have to finish it. That’s the unwritten rule of Bacchus. But for those of you who don’t finish your bottles, here’s an idea: A dated wine stopper.

iPods Fall 2010

With much fanfare as expected, Apple introduced the latest family of iPods. Most notably the new iPod Touch gains Facetime capability with dual cameras and the high resolution Retina display from the iPhone 4. The new iPod nano ($149-$179) also gets updated with a completely new form factor that significantly shrinks down the device with a touch-enabled enabled screen. Lastly, the Shuffle gets even smaller (as if it wasn’t small enough) with a diminutive form factor and an amazing price ($49). Link

Push and Grab

This is a rather unique sort of table and drawers situation if you ask me. This is a project whipped up by designer Nenad Kostadinov and what it consists of is a curved table with rotating drawers. Rotating! No more silly pulling and shoving for you, nay! Now there’s lots of swooshing. This is a low height wooden living room table with four of these unique drawers made for storing magazines, knick-knacks, and all manner of small objects.

Basically this object is constructed of a single “bendywood” piece that’s supported by two cylinders, each of these cylinders being also the axis of rotation for each of the drawers.

Roly Poly Iron

I’ve been watching BBC’s The Genius of Design and it has totally re-educated my perspective of the Industrial Design profession. The genius of design is in offering solutions to a problem in such a way that they don’t compromise on our routine habits. The other aspect of designing that I understood was that it’s not wrong for designers to try and improvise an existing solution, with their own perceptions. Usually I disregard a design submission that is very similar to a published post, but this time around I want to bring out the two and spark a debate on the design challenge.

Problem:

The clothes iron is a fantastic invention and the technique dates back to the ancient Chinese people using pans filled with hot coals to iron out clothes. With electricity and modernization we moved on to regular and steam irons. However one situation remained constant with the advent of new technologies – burning clothes due to carelessness.

Solution:

One solution that we recently saw was the Roly Poly Iron designed by Wonkook Lee. It worked on the rocking principle where weights in the handle pulled back the iron into a standing position, when not in use. A simple enough idea that was worth exploring!

Designers: Sangyong Park, Jungmin Park & Sunwoo Hwang

Seasoning Made Beautiful

Agility and sensitivity are the two prerequisites for an accomplished chef. What will enhance the performance of even the most established professional is a system that can minimize the clusterfuck of seasoning. Cruet showcases a neat, streamlined container set design with generously diverse color schemes and types to be used in the kitchen. The smooth elegant contour of the container – a reminder of the conventional milk bottle – offers the chef a good grip; comfortable yet an intriguing aesthetic sensation.

Snakkes Speech Bubble Lamp and Whiteboard

The Snakkes wall lamp is shaped like a speech bubble and also functions as a white board. Multiple functions and tongue-in-cheek design — what’s not to love? Oh, and Snakkes means “talk to you later” in Norwegian.
