30 Cameras. 1 Mirage Moment. Rip Curl.

In short, Rip Curl took their team of world class surfers, including 2x ASP World Champ Mick Fanning, along with the guys who created the bullet time effect (as seen in the Matrix) to Fiji to create a world first in surfing footage.

It was pretty crazy, they ended up using an array of 30 GoPro Hero 2 HD cameras, firing consistently as surfers ride towards and past it. The results are unique ’frozen moments of time’ – that can be viewed in a combination of angles for a true in the round perspective.

The revolutionary campaign captures surfing in a way never seen before. The multi frame array of cameras gives us a Matrix style suite of ‘Mirage Moments’, which pull the viewer into the image, stalling there for long enough to enjoy a great move, before travelling down the line through the footage to the next Mirage Moment. The viewing metaphor for surfing in itself.

UNDERCOVER x Nike GYAKUSOU 2011 F/W

UNDERCOVER x Nike GYAKUSOU 2011 F/W design

To exemplify the characteristics of this collection, Takahashi and his running crew, GIRA (GYAKUSOU International Running Association) a small but dedicated group of Tokyo-based runners, gathered in the still thriving center of historic Japanese culture, the city of Kyoto, to capture the beauty and functionality of the collection.

Shooting in centuries old temples immersed in nature, the crew visited Tofuku-ji, a National Treasure of Japan, founded in 1236, and Kozan-ji, which is registered as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Director and Art Director Tetsuya Nagato and Photographer Katsuhide Morimoto, frequent collaborators with Undercover and Takahashi, managed to obtain permission to shoot in some of Japan’s most significant and remarkable sites where, in general, you are not allowed to run inside.
